Comments:

Mice homozygous for the nervous spontaneous mutation (nr) may be recoginzed at 2-3 weeks by their smaller size and hyperactive ataxic behavior. There is a 90% loss of Purkinje cells between 23-50 days in homozygous mutant mice. The mitochondria of all Prukinje cells bemoe large and rounded beginning at 9 days. Sbusequently most Purkinge cells degenerate. In the retina there is degenration of the photoreceptors, which is already present at 13 days. Viability is nearly normal, and both sexes are fertile but very poor breeders.
